Glow Lab Gel Cleanser Review

Glow Lab is an up and coming New Zealand based skincare brand that aims to combine natural eco-friendly ingredients with scientifically based formulas. With a neatly curated line of ten essential products and a millenial friendly aesthetic, I couldn't help but be curious about it when it launched in Priceline a few months ago. Being a cleanser addict, I thought it'd be the best place to start when exploring the line, so I bought their simply named Gel Cleanser, which contains 140ml (4.73 fl oz) and retails for $15.99. Glow Lab is cruelty free (this cleanser is vegan friendly, as well), and their products are made in New Zealand.

Glow Lab's Gel Cleanser comes in an opaque black plastic bottle topped with a pump. While I'm normally a big fan of pumps on skincare, this one is bothersome - it clogs so easily, causing a messing split stream of product with each pump. An ivory label wraps around the bottle, offering a product description, directions, and ingredient list. The label has been peeling off of the bottle since just a few days after I brought it home, which is annoying but not a major issue. This cleanser's packaging is recyclable.

Glow Lab's Gel Cleanser is a thin, clear gel that works into a light, easily rinsed lather. This gentle cleanser leaves my skin feeling soft, balanced, and fresh after each wash. Glow Lab's Gel Cleanser can't remover any makeup whatsoever, but it makes a nice morning or second cleanse - our bottle lives in our shower. This simple cleanser doesn't warrant much else of an explanation, but I will mention that it has a moderately strong herbal scent that I find quite pleasant.

This Gel Cleanser has a very simple base of water, a gentle sugar bases surfactant, and glycerin. This cleanser is filled to the brim with botanical extracts including antioxidant rich bilberry, mildly exfoliating sugar cane, and brightening (but sensitizing) lemon and orange extracts. The rest of the cleanser is made up of non-problematic thickeners and preservatives. The final ingredient of Glow Lab's Gel Cleanser is a fragrant essential oil blend containing jasmine, eucalyptus, clove, patchouli oils and more. Every single essential oil in this fragrance is irritating to the skin and poses little to no topical benefit.

Based on my experience, I would say that Glow Lab's Gel Cleanser would work well for pretty much every skin type, unless you're on the extreme end of the dry/oily spectrum. While I haven't personally experienced any irritation while using this cleanser, I certainly wouldn't recommend it to those with known sensitivities to essential oils or fragrance.

Glow Lab's Gel Cleanser is a very simple cleanser that will remove the day (or night's) dirt and oil without knocking your complexion off balance. I'm not a big fan of essential oils in my skincare - while they may smell good, they rarely serve a purpose, and are usually pretty bad for your skin - luckily they aren't included in every product in this range. While I won't be repurchasing this gel cleanser, I'm curious to try more from Glow Lab!
