Marc Jacobs Earthquake&Irony Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon Review+Swatches

Marc Jacobs Beauty says "Experience the intense color payoff, amazing glide and 12-hour longwear of Marc Jacobs beauty’s original award-winning highliner gel eye crayon eyeliner--re-envisioned in a bold matte finish. The pure hues are glitter-free, intensified by super-rich pigment. Unlike other eye pencils, this malleable formula glides on smoothly for precise application and gives you 15 seconds of play time before it sets in place for wear that lasts all day, making it ideal for creating versatile eye looks. Line to define your eyes, smudge it before it sets to create an instant smoky eye, layer as an eyeshadow base, or design artistic graphic liner looks. Its waterproof gel formula makes it well-suited for lining the inner rim, too. Its clever sharpener hidden in the base of the liner allows for a point that's as precise as you desire." Available in twelve shades, each Matte Highliner retails for $25USD ($36AUD). Marc Jacobs Beauty is cruelty free and sold exclusively at Sephora. These eyeliners are made in Korea.
The Matte Highliner Gel Eye Crayons come in a long, thin, sleek grey pencil with a color matched grip towards the tip of the pencil. The twist mechanism at the base of the pencil pops out to offer a convenient sharpener. There isn't much else to say about this eyeliner's attractive and functional packaging. My only complaint is that it doesn't seem to be recyclable.
I had mixed feelings about my first experience with Marc Jacobs' eyeliners, so I was cautious about trying the new matte formula. I threw that caution to the wind after the first swatch. Why? Because they're amazing! Both of the Matte Highliner Gel Eye Crayons I received are creamy, pigmented, and long wearing. I don't think there's anything that I dislike about these designer eyeliners! Irony and Earthquake perform equally well for me - both of these matte pencil liners glide across the eyelid or waterline, depositing an opaque line of matte color. If you plan on smudging or smoking out these eyeliners, Marc Jacobs Beauty wasn't kidding when they said you only get 15 seconds to play around - I timed these liners and right around the 14-15 second mark they go from fairly malleable to budgeproof - and they stay that way! I get fantastic wear from both shades of the Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon, with each of them lasting up to ten hours on my eyelids without fading or smudging, even on a hot day. Wear on the waterline is a little less dependable, with fading occurring after two or three hours. Personally I don't mind touching up my waterline once or twice a day but if you're more demanding in that department, you may not be satisfied by Marc Jacobs' matte Highliners. Despite the waterproof, long wearing nature of the Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayons I don't find these liners difficult to remove with a good cleansing oil.
Marc Jacobs Earthquake Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon Swatch
Earthquake is a matte, neutral dark chocolate brown that is a pretty close match to my eye color. I love wedging this deep brown into the lash line to make my lashes look thicker! I don't reach for brown eyeliner often, but surprisingly Earthquake is my favorite of the two shades.
Marc Jacobs Irony Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon Swatch
Irony is a matte neutral charcoal shade that's almost dark enough to qualify for a soft black, but it doesn't quite make the cut. While the formula is excellent, I don't find myself using Irony very often because I like my eyeliner dark and charcoal tones aren't really my style. I do think this deep grey would pair wonderfully with a soft smokey eye though.
I'm very impressed with Marc Jacob's Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayons! These luxury pencil liners have a flawless formula in my opinion - really I can't think of any negatives, aside from the lack of a true black shade. If you're on the market for a new eye pencil, I think the matte Highliners are a fantastic but pricey choice that's definitely worth picking up. I'm certainly interested in getting more - I'll be swatching more shades for sure (I've got my eye on Fine Wine!). The matte Highliners are one of the best makeup products I've tried in a long time and they've left me thirsty for more Marc Jacobs Beauty.
