Rodan+Fields Redefine Skincare Regimen + Acute Care Review

Rodan+Field's Redefine range is a "comprehensive skincare regiment that layers cosmetic ingredients and proven peptide technology to help defend against and reduce the visible signs of aging for noticeably firmer, smoother, flawless looking skin." The Redefine Skincare system is made up of fifteen products, I was lucky enough to receive the 4pc Redefine Regimen starter kit ($193) and Acute Care for Expression Lines ($220) from iFabbo. Rodan+Fields, founded by Doctors Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields (the dermatologists behind Proactiv), is a cruelty free brand with an interesting business model. Rodan+Fields products can be purchased directly through the brand's website, or through 'independent skincare consultants' - kinda like a much pricier Avon or Mary Kay. Most of Rodan+Field's products are American Made.

The Redefine line has a very cohesive packaging style that looks very professional, but not overly clinical. All packaging is white, with grey lettering and blue detailing. I'm split on this skincare range's packaging. I like the Daily Cleansing Mask's squeeze tube and Pore Minimizing Toner's dropper bottle - they're both functional and sanitary. On the other hand, packaging for both moisturizers is disappointing, they both come in jars! You think dermatologists would've known better! All of Rodan+Fields packaging is recyclable.
Before I move on to individual reviews, I want to let you know about my skin and previous skincare routine. For the most part, I have normal skin that's a little bit acne prone. When I began  using Rodan+Fields' Redefine Regimen, I was in at the tail end of a two month long breakout caused by a bad reaction to a cleanser, and further exacerbated by hormones. I introduced more glycolic acid into my skincare routine and things were looking up - but progress was slower than I would've liked. I began using Rodan+Fields Redefine Regimen on April 1st, and I woke up to great results! My skin started clearing up literally overnight. My complexion looked brighter, less red, and felt much smoother. Within five days my acne was gonesies! I had a brief hormonal relapse in the middle of the month, but even that cleared up faster than usual. These products certainly work...yet for some reason I'm not really crazy about any of them individually. Lets take a closer look...
Step 1: Daily Cleansing Mask - $41, 125ml/4.2 fl oz

The Redefine Daily Cleansing Mask is a "creamy, kaolin clay-based cleansing mask [that] dries in two minutes, drawing impurities from pores without robbing skin of essential moisture. Fine dimethicone microbeads gently exfoliate to smooth the skin without disrupting skin’s delicate moisture barrier." This clay mask is meant to be applied to dry skin, morning and night and left on til dry - a minute and a half to three minutes, usually. This mask doesn't fully dry like most clay masks, making it very easy to rinse away, leaving no residue. This cleansing mask is great for soaking up a bit of excess oil and firming the skin. Do be aware that this mask cannot remove makeup, so be sure to pre-cleanse in the evening. My favorite part of Rodan+Fields mask? The extremely mild exfoliation that occurs when you rinse. The exfoliating granules are small and soft, delicately polishing the skin as you remove the mask, leaving behind soft, smooth skin with a hint of a glow. The Daily Cleansing Mask has a soft, fresh scent that's pleasant but unnecessary.
Step 2: Pore Minimizing Toner - $47, 125ml/4.2 fl oz

The Redefine Pore Minimizing Toner is an "exclusive combination of pore-clarifying ingredients [that] minimize the appearance of enlarged pores in this fast-acting, alcohol-free liquid vehicle. Gentle polyhydroxy acids exfoliate pore clogging dead skin cells while natural oligosaccharides help reduce the appearance of pores and prepares skin for the treatments that follow." This toner is meant to follow up both applications of the Daily Cleansing Mask. In my opinion, Rodan+Fields Pore Minimizing Toner is woefully average - but that doesn't mean its bad. This alcohol free toner wipes away any traces of left over makeup and cleanser, as well as excess oil, without stripping or drying my skin. Sadly, I haven't noticed any benefits from chemical exfoliation, despite having active ingredient so high up on the ingredient list.
 Step 3 (AM): Triple Defense Treatment w/ SPF 30 - $80, 30ml/1 fl oz
The Redefine Triple Defense Treatment is a "moisturizing treatment with photostable broad spectrum SPF 30 protection. It contains a clinically proven concentration of powerful peptides to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles and visibly firm skin. SHIELDrf provides effective broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and visibly decelerates the signs of photoaging that appear over time." Much like the Pore Minimizing Toner, the Triple Defense Treatment doesn't seem to be anything special. This moisturizer has a silky, thin texture that helps it glide over the skin and sink in quickly. The Triple Defense Treatment provides adequate hydration and sun protection, but it doesn't do anything that warrants it's luxury price point. This moisturizer has a faint sunscreen scent.

Step 3 (PM): Overnight Restorative Cream - $73, 30ml/1 fl oz

The Redefine Overnight Restorative Cream is an "ultra-hydrating cream which replenishes skin’s natural moisturizing factors (NMFs) while you sleep for visibly firmer, less-lined skin in the morning. Moisture recycling complex of hyaluronic acid and glycerin prevent moisture loss while 12-hour, time-released antioxidants A, C and E replenish vital skin nutrients." This right here is the Redefine regimen's all star! This thin night cream causes the gentlest tingle upon application, indicating active ingredients at work! Despite it's light consistency, Rodan+Fields' Overnight Restorative Cream is very hydrating and it plumps up the skin significantly. My skin looks and feels fantastic every morning - firmer, brighter, and fuller. The Overnight Restorative Cream is the most effective product in this skincare range, in my experience.
Acute Care for Expression Lines - $220, 10 Treatments

Rodan+Fields says "find your expression. Lose the wrinkle. REDEFINE ACUTE CARE smooths expression lines with proprietary Liquid Cone Technology that melts line-defying peptides and hyaluronic acid directly into the wrinkle for a more youthful appearance. You can experience long-lasting results after ten applications, and you may even see results after the very first use. It’s so simple, you can do it in your sleep." The Acute Care for Expression Lines is a unique product for sure. These under eye patches (that look and feel like clear BandAids) have dozens of tiny spikes made up for pure hyaluronic acid. As you wear them overnight, these prickly little cones melt and sink into the skin, almost overloading the under eye area with moisture, causing it to plump up and push fine lines and wrinkles out.

The fine lines under my eyes are pretty minor, but I tried the Acute Care patches anyway, because as they say, prevention is key. We all know the stereotype that Russian women say youthful and pretty til one day, out of the clear blue sky *boom!* instant babushka. That scares me, I'll do anything to prevent that! I also convinced Dean, who has hereditary terrible under eyes to try a pair, so I'm able to share his results as well!

Rodan+Fields Acute Care patches are easy to apply but annoying to wear; they pull the skin taught, and you'll definitely be aware of them - Dean found them quite difficult to sleep in. Removal is pretty unpleasant, it feels exactly like you'd expect, like peeling a BandAid off your under eye. These hyaluronic patches leave my lower eyelid a little puffy and heavy with some leftover residue. Once the residue is rinsed away, the puffiness recedes to show the product's true results. Dean and I both showed similar results, the Acute Care for Expression Lines patches did significantly reduce the appearance of our fine lines, but the results were very short lived, and everything went back to normal by the end of the day. I've used four treatments so far, and the results seem to last a little longer with each application. By the way, the Acute Care patches are meant to be used roughly every three days.
Overall, I found Rodan+Fields Redefine Regimen to be good - they're certainly effective products, but I wouldn't call any of them incredible. I saw great results within just a few days - my skin is looking much better, its almost acne free thanks to Rodan+Fields. Of the five products I was sent, I'm most impressed by the Overnight Restorative Cream and least pleased by the Pore Minimizing Toner. All up, I think Rodan+Fields' products are quite pricey for what I estimate to be a 6-8 week supply of product. Since the combined total of all five products came up to $461, a bit more than my rent, I won't be repurchasing these products - I just don't have that kind of money to spend. If you can afford a Rodan+Fields skincare regimen (there are four in total), theses products do work.

  1. I agree I received samples and I didn't like how they pulled my skin to remove them. Also WAY TOO MUCH $$ for all of it.
